Our team took on the task of creating a social media campaign and adjusting the Knowledge is Power website for Gloria Gemma to better reach the target audience of millennials. Millennials are people whose ages range between twenty- two and thirty-seven; and as millennials, we were able to relate to and understand the target audience and what would appeal to them. This younger generation is harder for Gloria Gemma to reach due to the generation gap between the foundation’s organizers and the audience that they were aiming to reach. Through our obvious connection to the millennial demographic, we felt very confident in our abilities to improve both aspects of Gloria Gemma’s social media campaign.
In today's society, social media (e.g. Instagram), is taking over how people and companies interact and advertise their services; a Statista study analyzing the distribution of Instagram users worldwide as of April 2018 by age and gender reveals this trend. Here, the data highlights that approximately seventy-five percent of millennial age men and seventy-seven percent of millennial age women across the world use Instagram. This statistic affirms the need for a corporation such as Gloria Gemma to use an effective social media outlet to target millennials. By using Instagram as our platform for the campaign, we can select topics that younger audiences, as well as Gloria Gemma’s current audience, should consider adopting into their everyday routine. E-cigarette use, organic versus non-organic, emotional health, alcohol use, inflammation in the body, and healthy food choices are essential topics that millennials should be familiar with. The Knowledge is Power campaign through Instagram creates a connection between the audience and the organization, as well as gets important information spread through a quick and easy-to-access platform.
To initiate research, we have reviewed the task at hand and identified a few potential solutions to target more millennials. We have analyzed the task at hand and have identified solutions in order to help target more millennials. To begin, one emphasis point that we needed to augment is the effectiveness of a powerful Instagram page; primarily revolving around the similarity in current previous posts, which we believe millennials tend to scroll past. By increasing the variety and style of images used for the posts, we were able to create Instagram posts that are not only eye-catching but are also sharing vital and relevant information. Additionally, we have conducted research and delivered evidence-based recommendations on what the best times the post on Instagram are to maximize millennial traffic. The “Knowledge is Power” website will benefit from our recommended design and information enhancements that we drafted through referencing other popular corporation’s websites that provide similar information. This comparison provided the knowledge our team utilized to suggest better ways to present the information.
Our suggestions are reflected through the six-monthly Instagram posts we created that we believe will catch the eyes of more people, especially millennials, and drive more traffic to not only your social media pages, but also to your “Knowledge is Power” website. The topics of those six- monthly Instagram posts are as followed:
1. Organic versus Non-Organic Food
2. Alcohol Causing Cancer
3. Role of Emotional Health on Cancer Risk
4. E-Cigarette Usage and Cancer Risk
5. Inflammation in the Body and Cancer Risk
6. Processed/Fast Foods and Cancer Risk

Our team was also assigned with augmenting the “Knowledge is Power” campaign website to provide more information regarding the six- monthly Instagram posts. Looking at the design, we realized that a more effective way of sharing information on the website includes some more design aspects, rather than content. Background knowledge, including research on the requested subjects (e.g. E-cigarette usage and cancer risk), can give the audience a better understanding on that topic they are reading before spending hours seeking other sources of information. Books, blogs, medical articles, and podcasts listed on the “knowledge is Power” page, with brief descriptions (which the current Gloria Gemma website features), are ways to add more substance to the campaign. People can read more about its purpose through primary sources instead of deciphering our own research. More visual aspects, such as images relating to the subject, should be inserted. For example, colorful, aesthetically-pleasing pictures draw attention to the related information and add excitement to topics that may be seen as dull. A live Instagram feed through a safe, reliable website will allow for people visiting the website to access the Instagram page. The live feed will update every 24 hours, ensuring that new posts are shown on the website. Our team believes that these recommendations will further benefit Gloria Gemma’s Knowledge is Power campaign.

This is the information found during our research process. This will give an overview of the background information we used as we created this social media campaign. This research is the basis for the information contained in each of the Instagram posts as well as the Knowledge is Power website.
Many people are unaware that one’s diet has a direct relationship to their level of cancer risk, and in our case, their level of risk for breast cancer. Processed and fast foods harms people's physical and mental health to where their body is not healthy enough to fight off cancerous cells; however, through dieting and eating healthy foods, one can fortify their immune system to increase their ability to prevent cancer. Nutrition experts stress the importance to living a healthy lifestyle. Countless studies conducted over many years highlight the fact that a healthy diet combined with regular exercise boosts immune systems to help reduce the risk of contracting breast cancer.
A study from Dr. Karin Michels of the University of California Los Angeles, who helped lead a study at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital suggest that girls who eat a high-fat diet during puberty, even if they don't become overweight or obese, may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life. Practicing healthy dieting at a young age sets the foundation for your future and more important, sets an example for others to follow. Another positive from healthy living and dieting is that is ingrains a mentality to never give up or give in to a hard situation. As previously stated, processed and unhealthy foods lower your immune system and increase your risk for cancer; to reduce cancer risk related to diet, one can adopt a few of the following diet tips:

As previously stated, processed and unhealthy foods lower your immune system and increase your risk for cancer; to reduce cancer risk related to diet, one can adopt a few of the following diet tips:
- Eliminate some foods with high-fat content (especially trans-fat foods): fried foods and margarine, and gradually lower the amount of those foods/ fat you eat.
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (more than 5 cups a day). Diets rich in plant foods may be healthier than diets that contain a lot of animal products. One can get the nutrients they need from a variety of foods, especially fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. These foods can make you feel your best and give your body the energy it needs in addition to lowering your fat intake and increasing your fiber intake due to the decreased intake of animal products.
- Eat Healthier Snacks— Try organic baby carrots, bell pepper strips, orange sections, fat-free yogurt, or a handful of almonds instead of chips or cookies.
- Mix up your protein sources —Try fish or lamb instead of beef or pork.
Organic versus non-organic food is a popular debate that lies amongst those who want to live a healthier lifestyle. Many people wonder if conventionally grown (non-organic), foods have negative health effects that can outweigh the natural benefits that the food provides. First, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary 2018, the word “organic” is defined as “of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides”. With now knowing the definition of organic, this lead us toward researching the effects pesticides had on conventionally grown food when compared to organically grown food without pesticides.
In an article “Organic food in the diet: Exposure and health implications” written by Brantsæter et. al., additional health benefits were found by eating organic produce over its non-organic counterparts. One other important aspect we took into consideration is whether or not organic food minimized one’s risk of being diagnosed with cancer. In our research, we found that consuming organic food has minimal effect on one’s risk, and prevention of getting cancer. The article “Organic food consumption and the incidence of cancer in a large prospective study of women in the United Kingdom” written by Bradbury et. al. provided us with the information that the only health benefit is a 21% lower risk of contracting non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Though eating non-organic foods does not seem to reduce the risk of contracting breast cancer in women, this information is still crucial because it reveals a possibility of lowering the risk of another particular form of cancer in women. Considering that there was little or no decrease in other cancers, this leads to the conclusion that the health benefits of organic food may not be as great as many people assume in the context of breast cancer prevention. The collected information between those two articles lead us to a few more medical articles as well as blogs and books that revealed information useful for those who are curious about the topic.
Some sources such as the books outlining health benefits of organic foods are more user-friendly and can be given to our audience as part of the “Knowledge is Power” campaign; whereas, scholarly articles we referenced need to be broken down in ways where information is more accessible and easier to understand by our target audience. It is important to have easily accessible information so that people can get the answers they need without wasting time searching for the knowledge they seek.

Emotional Health can be defined as “one’s needs to be valued and the wellbeing of each and every individual that enables them to carry out daily activities while maintaining a healthy lifestyle”. People who are emotionally healthy are not only in control of their actions and feelings, but also have the ability to take on daily challenges that stand in their way. When researching the role that emotional health plays on cancer risk, two key factors that we found in almost every research study analyzed were the effects of physical and physiological stresses. With these stresses, both internal and external factors take a toll on the body that can overtime lead to cancer. From a Myers Detox study (which I found to be a major component of my research), there is a six-step process in which stress can develop into cancer. As for a timeframe, cancers form within the body at a cellular level over an eighteen to twenty-month period. While researching the effects emotional health can create on the body, a key aspect of my research placed heavy emphasis on not only seeking help, but finding ways to reduce stress and depression levels.
As stated in the previous paragraph, one must be aware of his/her attitudes, emotions, and thoughts, in order to be considered “in control” of their emotional health. Four focus points that define control of your emotional disorder consist of: being aware of your emotions/reactions, expressing yourself, thinking before you act and managing physical actions. Metal management is consistently misinterpreted and overlooked in the study on emotional health, as many research articles confuse the importance of helping yourself and finding help. Emotional health is a serious concern that if not handled properly and handled professionally, can create serious damage to not only a specific individual, but those close to you such as loved ones as well.
In prior conversations regarding themes of the month for Gloria Gemma’s “Knowledge is Power” campaign, each overlying topic is required to contained a message that ultimately summarized what was trying to be accomplished during that month. After researching the role emotional health plays on cancer risk, my underlying theme is that you never know what someone else is going through and during this month of September, people should remember to act kind and treat others the way you want to be treated. To get into specifics, the second week of September each year is National Suicide prevention week, which ties into the emotional health disorders of depression and stress. In this month, it’s important to show acts of gratitude and respect simply by conducting friendly gestures or even giving compliments; you never know what someone is going through in their life, and the smallest sign of care that you give them can truly go a long way.

When looking at alcohol in relation to causing cancer, we were able to find evidence on how alcohol has caused head/neck, esophageal, liver, and breast cancer. While looking at these different types of cancer it causes, we were able to find the effects alcohol has on people's bodies. One effect was the metabolizing of alcohol and how it can damage people’s DNA, protein, and lipids. Another effect we found was how alcohol impairs the body’s ability to break down and absorb nutrients that have association with causing cancer such as Vitamin A, B, C, D, and E. The final effect we looked at was how people’s genetics with alcohol usage were affecting people’s risk of contracting cancer. People’s genetics consist of two enzymes called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ADH2). These two enzymes had a direct effect with alcohol and even increased the risk of causing cancer because these enzymes sped up the conversion of alcohol (ethanol) to toxic acetaldehyde. Toxic acetaldehyde is a frequently found air toxin that increases risk of cancer. To conclude our research, we then found three different doctors that specialize in the subject of alcohol and causing cancer. All of the doctors had a common theme in their opinion of Alcohol and cancer, which was that drinking less will lower your chances of having cancer. After looking at the important facts we found about alcohol and cancer risk, we came to the conclusion that moving forward, we as people need to learn more about the negative health impacts alcohol has on our bodies in order take action and prevent cancer diagnosis due to alcohol consumption.
We took a look at how improving your Instagram account can help convey accurate information to the public about how alcohol usage can cause an increase risk to cancer. Social media can help create a platform for communicating science-based, health-related messages such as the effects of alcohol consumption. We believe our Instagram posts can bring more attention to prevention and treatment of substance use and addiction of alcohol. There are many reasons Instagram posts can accomplish the task of making people for self-aware of their abusive problems and what health issues that can occur as a result. One benefit Instagram posts can provide is people on Instagram can be a role model for people who have abusive alcohol problems. Instagram can provide people encouraging these abusers to seek help because they may have gone through their own personal struggle with alcohol abuse. Another benefit of Instagram posts is Instagram is among the top users of social media in the United States. The United States social media daily report reveals that 76% of people use Facebook, 51% use Instagram, and 42% use Twitter. The evidence of Instagram being among the top social media outlets proves why Instagram posts will be effective in informing an audience of the problems alcohol can cause and how to go about preventing these problems. A benefit to Instagram posts is the importance for behavior change. Ample evidence indicates that existing social media groups can provide informational and emotional support to cancer survivors and caregivers. Lastly, Instagram posts can provide positive coping strategies because interventions have demonstrated preliminary efficacy for reducing problematic alcohol consumption. We think that alcohol abuse can be treated through the many benefits social media can provide. These benefits will make people feel less worried about their health and instead live a happy life.

E-cigarettes, also known as “vapes,” are marketed as the solution to the use of tobacco products as a whole. They are praised for being the healthier alternative to tobacco, but the key word here is “healthier.” Just because there is no tobacco in these products does not mean that it is healthy to use by any means. This misconception is the issue that society is facing today as many younger individuals are using e-cigarettes because they either believe that they are safe to use, or that they do not understand how e-cigarettes impact your health. There is a variety of information available on e-cigarettes available via online sources; however, many of them have the same research and statistics due to one reason — e-cigarettes have not been around long enough to understand all the dangers they pose. During our research, it was clear to us that this lack of understanding may be the biggest issue for the public.
The obvious genre to use in this sort of research are medical articles that provide credible research. With this in mind, our team decided to use the New England Journal of Medicine for the foundation of our e- cigarette research; specifically, we used the article The Health Effects of Electronic Cigarettes. To start, we present information on the process of how a vape works. Essentially, a vape works by heating up a coil using an electric current which burns the “juice” within the device. This creates the aerosol which is inhaled by the user. The big question at hand is, what is the user inhaling? Upon contrary belief, most juices contain nicotine which is an extremely addictive substance. Nicotine in itself can be dangerous for a user, as it has been shown to have impacts on one’s brain and lung development. This is especially apparent in minors who utilize the products, as their bodies are still developing. The other problematic ingredient that medical professionals know of is the flavor additives within the vape juice. These additives are usually harmless, as they are used in everyday food products. This is not a normal case of just consuming food, but rather when these additives are burned through the heating process, the vapor produced becomes a carcinogen. Not all additives have been studied, but vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol have undergone countless studies from the invention of e-cigarettes. These aerosols have been tested on rodents to determine long term effects on humans. This study resulted in the development of localized, mild squamous metaplasia in the upper airways. Clearly, these inhalants are not healthy in the short term or long term, but perhaps the most concerning part is that many of the ingredients have yet to be tested and their long-term impacts may not be known until it is too late.
One of the most recognizable e-cigarettes in the younger generation of today is known as the Juul. Buzzfeed’s article, Everything You Need To Know About The Juul, Including The Health Effects, gives a summary on the product, its significance and its impact on the health of users. The biggest concern of the Juul is that it has earned a spot as a trend among youth culture. Many young individuals, including minors are finding ways to obtain and use the product. The Juul “pods,” as the containers are referred as, are advertised as having flavors such as fruit medley, cool mint, and mango. One of these pods contains as much nicotine as one pack of cigarettes and four are included in every pack. As stated earlier, nicotine is a highly addictive substance and this amount of nicotine in one pod is a serious amount to inhale which just increases the likelihood of addiction and dependence to an e-cigarette. Once again, the biggest issue with the Juul is that the contents have unknown impacts on its users. This is mostly a concern since the Juul is relatively new to the market at only two years of age. The product is marketed for smokers looking to quit tobacco products, but the same advertisements and messaging meant for smokers reaches younger generations as well. Young individuals do not understand the risks involved with Juuls and other e-cigarette products, so they use them without knowledge of the health consequences (known and unknown). Juul states directly on their website, "no tobacco or e-liquid product should ever be considered 'safe' and we encourage consumers to do their own research regarding vapor products and what is right for them." The possibilities of long term health impacts won’t be known for years to come. In a similar fashion, it took our society years to understand that cigarettes are bad for human health and can lead to lung cancer as well as other health issues. In years to come, e-cigarettes may present the same issue.
This research will be the supporting information behind one month of topics for the Instagram page. The sources will be available as links for further personal research on the Knowledge is Power webpage. Also, a brief description of the information covered will be available in a similar fashion as this.

The topic of inflammation in the body is not often discussed; however, it is a proven link to cancer. Anyone can develop inflammation as it is simply the body’s response to help heal tissue. However, inflammation diseases and chronic inflammation, can lead to a far greater risk of contracting certain cancers. Chronic Inflammation can cause one’s DNA to become damaged and the resulting effect is cancer. The most common of these resulting effects include pancreatic, esophageal, liver, and colon cancers. Inflammation diseases are a common way of contracting cancer. They include pancreatitis, hepatitis, and colitis and are capable of causing cancer in the liver, colon, and pancreas over time due to the damaged DNA.
The most effective way of preventing inflammation is through a healthy diet. Simple suggestions for decreasing inflammation or preventing it in the first place are easy to follow and highly effective. Recommendations from Stephanie Maxson, a senior clinical dietitian at MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center, can help successfully reduce inflammation and are as follows:
Moreover, one the most crucial elements to reducing inflammation through diet is increasing your daily water intake. Hydration alone can reduce inflammation in the body and flush out toxins. Coupled with diet, exercise can also reduce inflammation through increased circulation.
As far as social media is concerned, and Instagram in particular, inflammation is not a popular topic. There is certainly a lack of awareness when it comes to this topic. With the social media presence that Gloria Gemma currently has, it can help spread awareness more efficiently. While inflammation is not a leading cause of cancer, it should still be a concern. Inflammation awareness should be encouraged to educate people about this cancer risk as the importance of it is growing. Today, even though there is more health and diet-related information than ever, America’s youth and young adults are still eating foods that cause inflammation. For example, many college students are at the mercy of what their school serves. In other words, there is no widespread initiative to solve this issue and until that occurs inflammation in the body will be a persistent issue. Social media is perhaps the best way to start that initiative.

We believe that with these suggestions and accompanying research, Gloria Gemma will have the capability to follow the model that’s been laid out for more effective Instagram posts and website design. We feel as if millennials will respond positively to our recommendations and allow for more awareness amongst younger generations. Our plan seeks to initiate involvement in communities through millennials and their all-important role of spreading information across society. Cancer is an apparent and ever-growing concern in today’s world, so spreading awareness and knowledge to younger generations of the world is key to spreading information quickly. According to the Gloria Gemma website, “It's not always easy to know if what you are seeing is fact or fiction.” This project provides accurate information to be used for the Knowledge is Power campaign.

Q: How important is it for someone to live a healthy lifestyle, especially at a younger age?
A: It is very important to live a healthy lifestyle. Numerous studies conducted over the years have proven that eating a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables along with exercise can reduce your risk of a variety of diseases and help you live a longer life. Practicing healthy living at a young age is important. It sets the foundation for your future and more important, an example for others to follow.
Q: What are some benefits from dieting?
