For our assigned preliminary analysis, students were given the opportunity to explore any discourse community of their interest and rhetorically analyze it through the scope of science writing. With this, students were also tasked with the responsibility of presenting the features of this specific discourse community and coming up with ways to portray this information in the most effective style possible. For my topic, I tried to stay within the realm of my major, which led me to focus in on the Organizational Behavior and big business, as I’m majoring in Business Management at Roger Williams. As for my topic, my goal was to uncover the genres that CEOs of an organization could use in order to effectively communicate with their activity systems. To break down the terminology, genres would refer to means of communication that a CEO could use such as email, memorandums, or even letters. Activity systems on the could hand would simply mean staff or employees. Through extensive research, outside interviews and knowledge obtained throughout the semester, I was able to conclude that there are a few key was CEOs can effectively communicate with their employees, but if not done correctly, internal turmoil could occur within a company as well. Check out my finding under my Preliminary Analysis final draft.
Reflecting back on the process of this preliminary analysis, there were many occasions where I felt I was able to develop as a writing solely by achieving the course goals that were set at the beginning of this semester. For example, one-course outcome that I was able to achieve through my preliminary analysis was metacognition knowledge, which can be defined as engaging in thoughtful, reflective practices regarding scientific discourse. One piece of my preliminary analysis that directly impacts this learning objective was the reflective introduction that was required for the beginning of my assignment. With a reflective introduction, a writer must actually walk a reader through his thinking process step-by-step as this can portray a clear vision that must be understand before actually getting into your prime deliverable. For my reflective introduction, I struggled at first as this was new to me as it was a part of scientific rhetoric; in the school of business, introductions are called executive summaries, where you give a brief overview of the entire project itself. In order to fully grasp the ability to deliver a reflective introduction, I sought help at the writing center of RWU in order to gain feedback to my prior draft. With this support, I was provided reassurance that I am on the right path to achieve my goal of delivering an effective reflection, but one thing I was missing was personal connection to my introduction. After careful revision, editing, and adding thoughtful meaning, I was able to establish a great opening for my preliminary analysis.
The second-course outcome that I was able to strengthen thought my time in Advanced Writing for the Sciences was the goal of genre knowledge, which can be defined as employing a variety of science-related genres to a professional/public situation. One way in which I was able to develop this learning outcome through the preliminary analysis was by making the connection of scientific rhetoric to my personal topic of CEOs and their means of communications. Two key terms as previously mentioned that were the focus of my preliminary analysis were genre and activates systems as these two proved to actually have an impact in the discourse of Organizational Behavior. Through outside studies, interviews conducted and class discussions, this scientific rhetoric has become more clear and feasible as it has enable me to construct a thorough and thoughtful report.
